Our History

Longford was established in 1870 along the Santa Fe railroad. The first post office, named New Grant, opened in 1872. However, after only 3 years, another post office was opened with the name of Longford - a name that came from a county in Ireland.  The name stuck! Today, the post office is located downtown.

Train Depot

In Longford's early days, the heart of the town was the train depot. It was built in 1887. This famous picture also inspired a town mural. The mural was painted on the West side of the current post office. The mural was repainted in 2025 thanks to The Longford Lions Club fundraising efforts.

Schools

Longford's first school was built in 1900. The one-room schoolhouse was for only primary students. High school courses were taught on the second floor of the city hall building. After that, a bigger grade school was built and used. In 1928, a high school was built. It is pictured to the left. The high school closed in 1970 and was later re-opened as an elementary school. The elementary school closed in 2009.
